On February 3rd, JFS of Metrowest hosted the third Homework Dinner and Academic Support Night at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham. These events have been very popular with parents, teachers and students alike and will be held once a month. The event was coordinated in close partnership with Framingham Public Schools, Woodrow Wilson PTO and Daniel’s Table.
Over 150 community members, including students, siblings, and parents, filled the Woodrow Wilson cafeteria, where Daniel’s Table provided a healthy meal. Teachers and community volunteers provided stations where students and parents worked on homework, learned about the curriculum, and further developed critical academic skills. Parents were able to spend time with their children, meet other parents, and hear about what their kids are learning in school.
The JFS Children’s Clothing Closet brought over 300 articles of winter clothing for families to peruse on their way into the event. Additional guests included the Pro Gente Connections who let parents know about their low-cost English classes, and a presentation from the Metrowest College Planning Center in which former Framingham High students described their experiences at local colleges and the importance of planning early. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Wilson community to come together and connect while learning more about the support available at the school.

Homework dinners give parents and caregivers a fresh opportunity to engage with their child’s learning and their school community. This engagement, in turn, increases family empowerment to build successful educational experiences for their children. As part of this pilot program, JFS will continue to host homework dinners at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. The JFS Children’s Clothing Closet hosts pop-up events to provide a store-like shopping experience at a variety of locations across the city of Framingham, including Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.
